Man convicted of 2013 slaying sentenced to life in prison

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man convicted in a slaying six years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

Washington County District Attorney Eugene A. Wittone formally announced the sentencing Thursday. A jury had decided in March against imposing the death penalty on 24-year-old Brandon Wolowski.

The sentence includes no possibility of parole.

Wolowski was convicted of first-degree murder in the January 2013 killing of 37-year-old Matthew Mathias during what authorities said was an attempt to steal a gun collection from the victim's house.

Prosecutors had argued that execution was warranted because a 45-year-old woman was wounded and the slaying occurred during commission of a felony. The defense cited Wolowski's difficult upbringing.

Defense attorney Noah Geary has said he plans to appeal.
