Shares of United Continental Holdings Inc. rose more than 5% in the extended session Tuesday after the airline beat Wall Street's adjusted earnings and revenue expectations. United said it earned $462 million, or $1.70 a share, in the quarter, compared with $579 million, or $1.98 a share, in the year-ago period. Adjusted for one-time items, United earned $657 million, or $2.41 a share, compared with $1.44 a share a year ago. Operating revenue rose to $10.5 billion from $9.5 billion a year ago.
