«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizonans who receive food stamps are getting their February benefits early because of the federal government's partial shutdown, and state officials want recipients to know they won't be getting additional benefits during February. The state Department of Economic Security says the early distribution of February benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to nearly 320,000 families during a four-day period ending Sunday comes under guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. HOUMA, La. (AP) — Lawrence DeHart took a new job about four months ago, one he alternately describes as "head janitor" and "professional beggar." His actual title is president of the Terrebonne Churches United Good Samaritan Food Bank, one that DeHart has held for two years now, but one that just recently became his full-time gig. DeHart left his previous job as a drone specialist to help feed those in need in Terrebonne Parish for roughly one-third of what he made before. "I prayed a lot about it," he said. Читать дальше...

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Timothy Gray hasn't been in Iraq for years, but his time in combat with the U.S. National Guard still affects him. His back and shoulder injuries make it hard to change positions, especially moving from sitting to standing — but mostly he is overwhelmed by what's in his head. The night terrors. The anxiety. The panic that comes with a simple trip to the grocery store. For four years, Gray had his self-trained service dog at his side, helping him get through the daily aftermath of his time at war... If he spots any of his youngsters hanging out late around Davis Homes, Fort Hill or south Macon, he stops to ask what they're doing. "I ask them why they're out so late and if they have school in the morning," Lester said of the Bibb County middle school students he mentors. Andrade got out to a fast start, using an educated jab to befuddle Akavov from distance and then following that up with a lot of left hand power shots to the head and body. As the fight progressed... Читать дальше...
