Simulating beach and dune evolution at decadal to centennial scale under rising sea levels

Plos.org

by Caroline Hallin, Magnus Larson, Hans Hanson

A numerical model for simulating beach-dune evolution at decadal to centennial time scales is developed. The work builds on an existing semi-empirical cross-shore model, the CS-model, to which the effect of sea level rise is added and the routines for aeolian transport and morphological dune evolution are improved. The model development is based on established conceptual models from the literature, which are translated into mathematical formulations and solved numerically. Читать дальше...

From crisis to self-confidence and adaptation; Experiences of being a parent of a child with VACTERL association – A complex congenital malformation

by Ann-Marie Kassa, Helene Engstrand Lilja, Gunn Engvall

Aim

Knowledge is scarce regarding mothers’ and fathers’ experiences of being a parent of a child with VACTERL association—a complex malformation. The aim of the study was to describe experiences of being a parent of a child with VACTERL association.

Method

Semi-structured interviews were performed with ten mothers and nine fathers face-to-face or by telephone and analyzed by using Qualitative content analysis.

Bioactive sphingolipid profile in a xenograft mouse model of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Plos.org

by Aiping Bai, Xiang Liu, Jacek Bielawski, Yusuf A. Hannun

The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of bioactive sphingolipids in xenograft mouse tissues of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. We utilized UHPLC-MS/MS to determine the profile of full set of ceramides, sphingosine, and sphingosine 1-phosphate in this xenograft mouse model. The tissues isolated and investigated were from brain, lung, heart, liver, spleen, kidney, bladder, tumors and blood. With the exception of equal volume of blood plasma (100ul)... Читать дальше...

Oral shea nut oil triterpene concentrate supplement ameliorates pain and histological assessment of articular cartilage deterioration in an ACLT injured rat knee osteoarthritis model

Plos.org

by Ing-Jung Chen, Sheng-Hsiung Lin, Chih-Shung Wong

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial joint disease and a common disabling condition in the elderly population. The associated pain and pathohistological changes in cartilage are common features of OA in both humans and animal models. Shea nut oil extract (SheaFlex75) contains a high triterpenoid concentration and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic effects in both human and animal studies. In this study, we aim to investigate... Читать дальше...

Event versus activity-based cues and motivation in school-related prospective memory tasks

Plos.org

by Ana B. Cejudo, Mark A. McDaniel, M. Teresa Bajo

Prospective memory (PM), the ability to remember an intention in the future, is essential to children’s everyday lives. We explored age differences (6- to 7- vs. 10- to 11-year-olds) in PM depending on the nature of the task and the children’s motivation. Children performed event-based PM tasks (in which the cue was presented during the ongoing activity) and activity-based PM tasks (in which the cue consisted of finishing the ongoing activity). Productivity growth of skilled nursing facilities in the treatment of post-acute-care-intensive conditions

Plos.org

by Jing Gu, Neeraj Sood, Abe Dunn, John Romley

Background

Health care is believed to be suffered from a “cost disease,” in which a heavy reliance on labor limits opportunities for efficiencies stemming from technological improvement. Although recent evidence shows that U.S. hospitals have experienced a positive trend of productivity growth, skilled nursing facilities are relatively “low-tech” compared to hospitals, leading some to worry that productivity at skilled nursing facilities will lag behind the rest of the economy. Loss of cytoplasmic incompatibility in Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti under field conditions

Plos.org

by Perran A. Ross, Scott A. Ritchie, Jason K. Axford, Ary A. Hoffmann

Wolbachia bacteria are now being introduced into Aedes aegypti mosquito populations for dengue control. When Wolbachia infections are at a high frequency, they influence the local transmission of dengue by direct virus blocking as well as deleterious effects on vector mosquito populations. However, the effectiveness of this strategy could be influenced by environmental temperatures that decrease Wolbachia density, thereby... Читать дальше...
