The value of cytoreductive nephrectomy on the survival of metastatic renal carcinoma patients based on the number of site-specific metastases

Plos.org

by Zhijian Zhao, Wenqi Wu, Xiaolu Duan, Guohua Zeng, Yongda Liu

Background

There has been significant uncertainty in the selection of candidates for cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). This report investigates the influence of site-specific metastases (bone, brain, liver, and lung) on the survival benefit of CN.

Methods

Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (2010–2014), 1113 mRCC patients treated with CN (n = 618) or no surgery (NS... Читать дальше...

Re-introducing non-optimal synonymous codons into codon-optimized constructs enhances soluble recovery of recombinant proteins from Escherichia coli

Plos.org

by Jennifer Konczal, Justin Bower, Christopher H. Gray

Gene synthesis services have largely superseded traditional PCR methods for the generation of cDNAs destined for bacterial expression vectors. This, in turn, has increased the application of codon-optimized cDNAs where codons rarely used by Escherchia coli are replaced with common synonymous codons to accelerate translation of the target. A markedly accelerated rate of expression often results in a significant uplift in the levels of... Читать дальше...

Baseline cultural competence in physician assistant students

Plos.org

by Melanie M. Domenech Rodríguez, Paula B. Phelps, H. Cathleen Tarp

Purpose

Cultural competence is a critical component in health care services. The relationship between health disparities and prejudice and discrimination is well documented. Prejudicial attitudes and discriminatory behavior are modifiable through training yet few programs have evidence-based training. No published data has reported on baseline levels of cultural competencies in medical trainees which is necessary for tailoring programs appropriate to the audience. Читать дальше...

Natural variation in the roles of C. elegans autophagy components during microsporidia infection

Plos.org

by Keir M. Balla, Vladimir Lažetić, Emily R. Troemel

Natural genetic variation can determine the outcome of an infection, and often reflects the co-evolutionary battle between hosts and pathogens. We previously found that a natural variant of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans from Hawaii (HW) has increased resistance against natural microsporidian pathogens in the Nematocida genus, when compared to the standard laboratory strain of N2. In particular, HW animals can clear infection, while N2 animals cannot. Читать дальше...

Host-response-based gene signatures for tuberculosis diagnosis: A systematic comparison of 16 signatures

Plos.org

by Hayley Warsinske, Rohit Vashisht, Purvesh Khatri

Background

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) have published target product profiles (TPPs) calling for non-sputum-based diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of active tuberculosis (ATB) disease and for predicting the progression from latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to ATB. A large number of host-derived blood-based gene-expression biomarkers for diagnosis of patients with ATB have been proposed to date... Читать дальше...

Synchronization dependent on spatial structures of a mesoscopic whole-brain network

Plos.org

by Hannah Choi, Stefan Mihalas

Complex structural connectivity of the mammalian brain is believed to underlie the versatility of neural computations. Many previous studies have investigated properties of small subsystems or coarse connectivity among large brain regions that are often binarized and lack spatial information. Yet little is known about spatial embedding of the detailed whole-brain connectivity and its functional implications. We focus on closing this gap by analyzing how spatially-constrained...
