Turnierfavorit Russland hat die Eishockey-WM in der Slowakei am Freitag standesgemäß mit einem Sieg eröffnet, Titelverteidiger Schweden dagegen mit einer Niederlage. In der Österreich-Gruppe B in Bratislava besiegte zunächst Russland Norwegen mit 5:2, anschließend verlor Schweden den Schlager gegen Tschechien 2:5.

Die Startruppe um Alexander Owetschkin besiegte am Freitag in der Gruppe B in Bratislava Norwegen mit 5:2 (2:0,2:0,1:2). Im Eröffnungsschlager in Kosice verlor Kanada überraschend gegen Finnland mit 1:3 (1:1,0:0,0:2).
