Mark your calendars: Modern Warfare returns this October.

After months of speculation (and a handful of leaks), Activision's plans for the 2019 Call of Duty game are now locked. Scheduled for an Oct. 25 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to take fans back to the start of one of the franchise's most iconic trilogies, reimagining its inspiration from the ground up.

After the slightly off-the-wall Black Ops 4 — which featured a time travel-themed zombie mode and Fortnite-style battle royale — Call of Duty is making the jump back to reality for its next release. Today, developer Infinity Ward officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a reboot of the long-running sub series with an intense focus on gritty realism.

By the end of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, a lot had happened in the series, from nuclear devastation to a Russian invasion of the US. So when the developers at Infinity Ward started plotting out the next game in the series, they realized something — they needed a clean slate.
