Estimating the economic incentives necessary for eliminating child labor in Ghanaian cocoa production

Plos.org

by Jeff Luckstead, Francis Tsiboe, Lawton L. Nalley

Concerns about the use of child labor in West African cocoa production became widespread in the early 2000s in many high-income countries. In 2015 in Ghana, 91.8% (or a total of 878,595) of the children working in the cocoa sector were involved in a form of hazardous work. Child labor in cocoa production is not just a symptom of poverty but also a contributing factor, as children often forgo a formal education to work in cocoa orchards. Current Ghanaian law prohibits child labor... Читать дальше...

An integration framework for linking avifauna niche and forest landscape models

Plos.org

by Eric S. Walsh, Tara Hudiburg

Avian cavity nesters (ACN) are viable indicators of forest structure, composition, and diversity. Utilizing these species responses in multi-disciplinary climate-avian-forest modeling can improve climate adaptive management. We propose a framework for integrating and evaluating climate-avian-forest models by linking two ACN niche models with a forest landscape model (FLM), LANDIS-II. The framework facilitates the selection of available ACN models for integration... Читать дальше...

A novel matrix of sequence descriptors for predicting protein-protein interactions from amino acid sequences

Plos.org

by Xue Wang, Yuejin Wu, Rujing Wang, Yuanyuan Wei, Yuanmiao Gui

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play an important role in the life activities of organisms. With the availability of large amounts of protein sequence data, PPIs prediction methods have attracted increasing attention. A variety of protein sequence coding methods have emerged, but the training of these methods is particularly time consuming. To solve this issue, we have proposed a novel matrix sequence coding method. Based... Читать дальше...

Global and country-specific mainstreaminess measures: Definitions, analysis, and usage for improving personalized music recommendation systems

Plos.org

by Christine Bauer, Markus Schedl

Relevance

Popularity-based approaches are widely adopted in music recommendation systems, both in industry and research. These approaches recommend to the target user what is currently popular among all users of the system. However, as the popularity distribution of music items typically is a long-tail distribution, popularity-based approaches to music recommendation fall short in satisfying listeners that have specialized music preferences far away from the global music mainstream. Incidence and characteristics of severe exercise-associated collapse at the world’s largest half-marathon

Plos.org

by H. Lüning, C. Mangelus, E. Carlström, F. Nilson, M. Börjesson

Background

Whilst many health benefits are associated with regular exercise, medical complications may occur during higher-intensity activities, such as long distance running contests. The most common complication is collapse. However, the incidence and characteristics of these collapses are not very well studied.

Method

This is a retrospective study of severe collapse, defined as a patient in need of advanced medical care after a collapse... Читать дальше...

Comparing summary measures of quality of care for family planning in Haiti, Malawi, and Tanzania

Plos.org

by Lindsay Mallick, Gheda Temsah, Wenjuan Wang

Measuring quality of care in family planning services is essential for policymakers and stakeholders. However, there is limited agreement on which mathematical approaches are best able to summarize quality of care. Our study used data from recent Service Provision Assessment surveys in Haiti, Malawi, and Tanzania to compare three methods commonly used to create summary indices of quality of care—a simple additive, a weighted additive that applies equal weights among domains... Prolonged inhibition of P-glycoprotein after exposure to chemotherapeutics increases cell mortality in multidrug resistant cultured cancer cells

Plos.org

by Amila K. Nanayakkara, Pia D. Vogel, John G. Wise

One common reason for cancer chemotherapy failure is increased drug efflux catalyzed by membrane transporters with broad pump substrate specificities, which leads to resistances to a wide range of chemically unrelated drugs. This multidrug resistance (MDR) phenomenon results in failed therapies and poor patient prognoses. A common cause of MDR is over-expression of the P-glycoprotein (ABCB1/P-gp) transporter. We report here on an MDR modulator... Читать дальше...

The foot and ankle structures reveal emergent properties analogous to passive springs during human walking

Plos.org

by Erica A. Hedrick, Steven J. Stanhope, Kota Z. Takahashi

An objective understanding of human foot and ankle function can drive innovations of bio-inspired wearable devices. Specifically, knowledge regarding how mechanical force and work are produced within the human foot-ankle structures can help determine what type of materials or components are required to engineer devices. In this study, we characterized the combined functions of the foot and ankle structures during walking by synthesizing the total force... Читать дальше...

Understanding the mechanics and balance control of the carrying pole through modeling and simulation

Plos.org

by Tong Li, Qingguo Li, Tao Liu

The carrying pole has existed as a load carrying tool for thousands of years and is still popular in many parts of Asia. Previous studies attempted to determine whether the elasticity of the carrying pole is energetically beneficial compared with other load carrying methods. However, conflicting results indicate that the effects of the carrying pole stiffness on the carrier are still unclear. The carrying pole exhibits more complex characteristics beyond stiffness, which invites further investigation. Читать дальше...

Oneself is more important: Exploring the role of narcissism and fear of negative evaluation in the relationship between subjective social class and dishonesty

Plos.org

by Song Wu, Jingyuan Liang, Jing Lin, Wei Cai

Previous studies have found that high social class individuals are more dishonest than low social class ones. However, the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon is still unclear. The “ignoring negative consequences” hypothesis suggests that belonging to a high social class makes individuals ignore the negative consequences of dishonesty, whereas the “self-focused” hypothesis suggests that belonging to a high social class makes individuals focus more on the self and self-interests.
