Scientists from the University of Nottingham have discovered that drinking a cup of coffee can stimulate 'brown fat', the body's own fat-fighting defenses, which could be the key to tackling obesity and diabetes.

(University of Texas at San Antonio) The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Engineering has been selected to receive approximately $2.6 million in City funding to complete three water sustainability projects in San Antonio. Five UTSA engineering professors and one environmental scientist from the College of Sciences will work on behalf of the City to demonstrate the viability of permeable parking lots, to use roadside vegetation and trenchless technology to improve water quality, and to mitigate inner city flooding.

Nutrition is the missing ingredient in home health today, new study shows

For nearly 5 million Americans a year, home healthcare is critical as they recover from illness or injury. New research highlights the important role nutrition plays in helping these patients stay healthy and out of the hospital. The new study finds that when home healthcare patients are screened for malnutrition, educated, and provided with a nutrition care plan that includes nutritional drinks, the risk of being hospitalized was reduced by 24% in the first 30 days and 18% after 90 days.

Long duration of sperm freezing makes no difference to live birth rates in large sperm bank study

Despite a time limit imposed in many countries on the freeze-storage of sperm, a new study from China has found that the long-term cryopreservation of semen in a sperm bank does not affect future clinical outcomes. Results of the study are presented today in Vienna at the 35th Annual Meeting of ESHRE by Dr Chuan Huang of the Changsa-Hunan Sperm Bank in China.

New reports provide guidance for obesity care

Advocates for obesity prevention and treatment have designed two new resources for medical educators, healthcare providers and community programs that will enhance the level of care for patients, according to two new studies published online today in Obesity, the flagship journal of The Obesity Society. The resources include the first set of competencies for how to care for patients with obesity for undergraduate and graduate medical education, and a proposed standard of care for people with obesity.

The AIM-260 Joint Air Tactical Missile could fly farther than the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, U.S. forces’ current main air-to-air missile, can do. The extra range could help Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps fighters to counter Chinese and Russian planes armed with their own long-range missiles.
