'How first influenza infection determines lifelong immunity decoded'

The first type of flu virus that people are exposed to in early childhood determines their ability to fight the infectious disease for the rest of their lives, according to a study which may lead to new understanding of how the human immune system fights influenza. According to the study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, early exposure to one of the two flu strains, HINI and H3N2, that generally circulate every year, imprints itself on our immunity, and disproportionately affects the body's lifelong response to the flu. 2 killed, 1 injured in motorcycle-van collision in Odisha's Balasore district

A motorcycle collided with a van on the National Highway-16 here, killing two people and injuring one, police said Friday. The three were riding the motorcycle when the accident occurred near Soro area here, they said. The victims, all residents of nearby Bhadrak district, were on their way to Panchalingeswar at Nilagiri. The deceased were identified as Chandan Rout of Asurali village and Simarani Swain of Nenjara village in the district. The injured, Swapna Jena, has been admitted to a hospital here, the police said.

Railways to allow armed escorts in freight trains to secure goods prone to theft

In a first, railways will allow armed escorts provided by private agencies in goods trains to ensure safety of commodities susceptible to pilferage and theft, according to an order issued by the national transporter. Armed escorts have been initially approved in the Eastern Railway zone and will be reviewed after a period of six months before it is extended to the other zonal railways, the order issued on January 29 said.
