Effects of peer tutoring on middle school students’ mathematics self-concepts

Plos.org

by Lidon Moliner, Francisco Alegre

The effects of peer tutoring on students’ mathematics self-concepts were examined. The Marsh questionnaire was used to measure students’ mathematics self-concepts before and after implementation of a peer tutoring program. A pretest posttest control group design was employed. Study participants included 376 students from grades 7 to 9 (12 to 15 years old). No statistically significant differences were reported between the pretest and the posttest for any of the control groups. Читать дальше...

Increases in [IP3]i aggravates diastolic [Ca2+] and contractile dysfunction in Chagas’ human cardiomyocytes

Plos.org

by Alfredo Mijares, Raúl Espinosa, José Adams, José R. Lopez

Chagas cardiomyopathy is the most severe manifestation of human Chagas disease and represents the major cause of morbidity and mortality in Latin America. We previously demonstrated diastolic Ca2+ alterations in cardiomyocytes isolated from Chagas’ patients to different degrees of cardiac dysfunction. In addition, we have found a significant elevation of diastolic [Na+]d in Chagas’ cardiomyocytes (FCII>FCI) that was greater than control. Читать дальше...

Near-optimal combination of disparity across a log-polar scaled visual field

Plos.org

by Guido Maiello, Manuela Chessa, Peter J. Bex, Fabio Solari

The human visual system is foveated: we can see fine spatial details in central vision, whereas resolution is poor in our peripheral visual field, and this loss of resolution follows an approximately logarithmic decrease. Additionally, our brain organizes visual input in polar coordinates. Therefore, the image projection occurring between retina and primary visual cortex can be mathematically described by the log-polar transform. Читать дальше...

Ensemble modeling of auditory streaming reveals potential sources of bistability across the perceptual hierarchy

Plos.org

by David F. Little, Joel S. Snyder, Mounya Elhilali

Perceptual bistability—the spontaneous, irregular fluctuation of perception between two interpretations of a stimulus—occurs when observing a large variety of ambiguous stimulus configurations. This phenomenon has the potential to serve as a tool for, among other things, understanding how function varies across individuals due to the large individual differences that manifest during perceptual bistability. Yet it remains difficult to interpret the functional processes at work... Читать дальше...
