New study detects ringing of the global atmosphere

Eurekalert.org

A ringing bell vibrates simultaneously at a low-pitched fundamental tone and at many higher-pitched overtones, producing a pleasant musical sound. A recent study, just published in the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences by scientists at Kyoto University and the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, shows that the Earth's entire atmosphere vibrates in an analogous manner, in a striking confirmation of theories developed by physicists over the last two centuries.

Milk lipids follow the evolution of mammals

Eurekalert.org

Skoltech scientists conducted a study of milk lipids and described the unique features of human breast milk as compared to bovids, pigs, and closely related primates. Their findings could be indicative of co-evolution of milk composition and the specific needs of the developing organism

BIO Integration (BIOI) Virtual Conference Series July 2020

Eurekalert.org

(Compuscript Ltd) The second session in the series will be titled Frontiers and Interdisciplinarity in Nanomedicine.BIO Integration (BIOI) virtual conference series 2020 is a series of online webinars which will be held between June and September 2020 covering topics of interest to the BIO Integration community.

Biomedical sciences researcher receives $3.65 million federal grant to develop antiviral drugs

Eurekalert.org

(Georgia State University) Dr. Richard Plemper, Distinguished University Professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University, has been awarded a five-year, $3.65 million grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to develop antiviral therapeutics for the treatment of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections.

CU Healthcare Innovation Fund closes with $50 million in committed capital

Eurekalert.org

(University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus) The fund expects a majority of its investments to be focused on digital health and healthcare IT ventures that have a co-development relationship with the campus. The fund will also invest in therapeutics and medical devices that have been developed on the campus and licensed to outside proven entrepreneurial teams with substantial backing.

Research explores how youth are excluded from public spaces, design practices

Eurekalert.org

(Iowa State University) America's youth have historically been excluded from using public spaces how they want, in addition to being left out of design discussions. Including them in this process will have long-term societal benefits, according to an Iowa State University researcher.

Searching for the silver lining in drinking water disinfection

Eurekalert.org

(University of Pittsburgh) Drinking water typically contains a disinfectant residual to help prevent and reduce microbial growth. A variety of things can interrupt this process, including long periods without water use observed in office buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic. This creates an ideal growth environment for many microbes such as Legionella pneumophila. A Pitt team will use an NSF grant to investigate whether silver modified shower fixtures prevent opportunistic pathogen exposure -- or perhaps do more harm than good.

Funding round to accelerate growth for technology to treat speech conditions

Eurekalert.org

(Purdue University) SpeechVive Inc. announced Tuesday (July 7) the completion of a convertible note that will provide the necessary resources to begin scaling the business. SpeechVive is a Purdue University-affiliated medical device company dedicated to treating the speech conditions of over 1.5 million people in the United States who suffer from chronic neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease.

Making a list of all creatures, great and small

Eurekalert.org

A paper published July 7, 2020 in the open access journal PLOS Biology outlines a roadmap for creating, for the first time, an agreed list of all the world's species, from mammals and birds to plants, fungi and microbes.

A new understanding of protein movement

Eurekalert.org

A team of UD engineers has uncovered the role of surface diffusion in protein transport, which could aid biopharmaceutical processing. This work will lead to the creation of new ways to reduce waste during the expensive drug manufacturing process, enabling more efficient ways of designing and developing manufacturing techniques.

RNA key in helping stem cells know what to become

Eurekalert.org

If every cell has the same genetic blueprint, why does an eye cell look and act so differently than a brain cell or skin cell? In a new study published this week, researchers come one step closer to solving this mystery, showing RNA plays a critical role.

Breakthrough machine learning approach quickly produces higher-resolution climate data

Eurekalert.org

Researchers at the US Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have developed a novel machine learning approach to quickly enhance the resolution of wind velocity data by 50 times and solar irradiance data by 25 times--an enhancement that has never been achieved before with climate data.

A 3D biofabricated cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma tissue model

Eurekalert.org

The cover for issue 27 of Oncotarget features Figure 4, "(A) Bimodal imaging examples of control and treated tumors (red) before and after the treatment period," by Browning, et al. and reported that the authors developed a 3-dimensional bioprinted skin model of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) tumors together with a microscopy assay to test chemotherapeutic effects in tissue.

Oncotarget: Epigenetic feedback and stochastic partitioning can drive resistance to EMT

Eurekalert.org

Oncotarget Volume 11, Issue 27 published "Epigenetic feedback and stochastic partitioning during cell division can drive resistance to EMT" by Jia et al. which reported that Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and its reverse process mesenchymal-epithelial transition are central to metastatic aggressiveness and therapy resistance in solid tumors.

Oncotarget: Australian experience of peptide receptor radionuclide therapy

Eurekalert.org

Oncotarget Volume 11, Issue 27 published "Australian experience of peptide receptor radionuclide therapy in lung neuroendocrine tumours" by Lim et al. which reported peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is an approved treatment modality for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, although Phase III randomised clinical trial data is not available for NETs of other site of origin, in practice, PRRT is used more widely in clinical practice, based on its mechanism of targeting the somatostatin receptor.

How to tackle climate change, food security and land degradation

Eurekalert.org

How can some of world's biggest problems -- climate change, food security and land degradation -- be tackled simultaneously? Some lesser-known options, such as integrated water management and increasing the organic content of soil, have fewer trade-offs than many well-known options, such as planting trees, according to a Rutgers-led study in the journal Global Change Biology.
