Читать дальше...As Ohio officials trace the state’s surging coronavirus case numbers to the reopened bars and restaurants, Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered that last call for drinks be moved up to 10 p.m. each night. It’s the latest on a long list of orders that makes almost no one in Ohio happy, even as it will protect public health and Ohio jobs.
Political polarization is rising to intractable heights, and America’s news media is evidencing a similar split. It is therefore difficult to trust any individual outlet, written, televised or podcasted, to uphold the staunch old ideals of fairness and impartiality.
Kudos to The Blade’s Tom Henry for writing about local water issues for several decades, providing information about regional environmental factors and how these affect recreation, aesthetics, economy, and public health. He has also highlighted the work of regional environmental groups, including those brave enough to take legal action against violations of the Clean Water Act — a federal document meant to provide us with drinkable, swimmable, fishable waters.
I see that right-wing pundits have returned to their complaints about liberal bias in academia. The latest example is David Brooks’ column “The future of noncomformity” that appeared in The Blade on July 27, in which he claims that conservatives are underrepresented in America’s universities and blames this on “the exclusion of conservatives from academic life.”
On July 1 Derek Merrin, Ohio state representative in District 47, sent out the following tweet: “The four City Council members should immediately resign. They have lost the public trust. The residents of Toledo, businesses, and our region should not have to endure one more day of them holding office.” When Mr. Merrin posted his indignant tweet, the above-mentioned Democratic council members had been charged with receiving a few thousand dollars in exchange for their votes but were not yet indicted.
James D. Jensen, who was a lawyer, an assistant U.S. attorney, and for more than two decades a judge — of the Lucas County Common Pleas Court and then the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeals — died Thursday in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Township. He was 77.
