Surface characterization of maize-straw-derived biochar and their sorption mechanism for Pb2+ and methylene blue

Plos.org

by Chunbin Guo, Jingjing Zou, Jianlin Yang, Kehan Wang, Shiyu Song

Biochar derived from straw is a potential low-cost adsorbent for metal ions and organic pollutants, but its practical application is still limited by the adsorption capacity. In this study, the correlation between the biochar’s properties and pyrolysis temperature was explored. The adsorption mechanism was studied by monitoring the changes of biochar properties before and after adsorption using BET, SEM, XPS and FT-IR spectroscopy. Читать дальше...

Shiny-SoSV: A web-based performance calculator for somatic structural variant detection

Plos.org

by Tingting Gong, Vanessa M. Hayes, Eva K. F. Chan

Somatic structural variants are an important contributor to cancer development and evolution. Accurate detection of these complex variants from whole genome sequencing data is influenced by a multitude of parameters. However, there are currently no tools for guiding study design nor are there applications that could predict the performance of somatic structural variant detection. To address this gap, we developed Shiny-SoSV, a user-friendly... Читать дальше...

Hospital inpatient care utilization among patients with tuberculosis, Republic of Ireland, 2015–2018

Plos.org

by James O’Connell, Eoghan de Barra, Samuel McConkey

Background

The Republic of Ireland (ROI) has a low incidence of TB. A reform of TB services in 2003 recommended that the delivery of care to patients with TB should primarily be in the outpatient setting, with limited indications for hospitalization. Three hospitals were designated as TB centres. Our aim was to describe the utilization of hospital inpatient care by patients with TB in the ROI.

Methods

We searched public hospital... Читать дальше...

Measuring newborn foot length to estimate gestational age in a high risk Northwest Ethiopian population

Plos.org

by Nega Dagnew, Ashenafi Tazebew, Abebe Ayinalem, Abebe Muche

Introduction

Preterm birth is defined as all births before 37 completed weeks of gestation. Globally, the prevalence rate of preterm birth ranges from 47.5 to 137 per 1000 live births. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of preterm birth is 10.1%. Several anthropometric parameters, particularly, head circumference and foot length(FL) have been used as a proxy measure for gestational age(GA).

Objective

To assess the use of newborn... Читать дальше...

Elevated blood pressure in high-fat diet-exposed low birthweight rat offspring is most likely caused by elevated glucocorticoid levels due to abnormal pituitary negative feedback

Plos.org

by Takahiro Nemoto, Takashi Nakakura, Yoshihiko Kakinuma

Being delivered as a low birthweight (LBW) infant is a risk factor for elevated blood pressure and future problems with cardiovascular and cerebellar diseases. Although premature babies are reported to have low numbers of nephrons, some unclear questions remain about the mechanisms underlying elevated blood pressure in full-term LBW infants. We previously reported that glucocorticoids increased miR-449a expression, and increased miR-449a... Читать дальше...

Do women in science form more diverse research networks than men? An analysis of Spanish biomedical scientists

Plos.org

by Adrián A. Díaz-Faes, Paula Otero-Hermida, Müge Ozman, Pablo D’Este

This paper examines the role of gender in the formation of research collaboration networks, by investigating the composition of networks through connections to diverse professional communities. Drawing on an ego network approach, we examine gender differences among researchers’ networks in terms of partner diversity, openness and brokerage roles. We use data from 897 valid responses to a questionnaire administered to biomedical scientists in Spain... Читать дальше...

Plos.org

by Jiaxing Xu, Pengcheng Yin, Wenmin Hu, Lili Fu, Hua Zhao

In the North China Plain, coal mining subsided lakes are surface water bodies that form after the conclusion of coal mining. In China, mining subsided lakes are often transformed into artificial wetland parks for ecological restoration. While many studies have focused on evaluating coal mining subsidence lake ecosystem service value and water pollution, little attention has been paid to changes in ecological regimes and ecological... A real-time stable-control gait switching strategy for lower-limb rehabilitation exoskeleton

Plos.org

by Ziming Guo, Can Wang, Chunning Song

Switching different gait according to different movements is an important direction in the study of exoskeleton robot. Identifying the movement intention of the wearer to control the gait planning of the exoskeleton robot can effectively improve the man-machine interaction experience after the exoskeleton. This paper uses a support vector machine (SVM) to realize wearer’s motion posture recognition by collecting sEMG signals on the human surface. The... Читать дальше...
