Between January 1 and August 31, Sotheby's sold $1.49 billion in fine art, a 31 percent tumble from a year ago, while Christie's reported $1.03 billion in fine art sales, a 54 percent plummet from the same period a year ago, according to rankings released today by Artmarket.
