ICYMI: Cubs Called Up A 1B/Outfielder
So, ugh, the Cubs had a new starting right-fielder against the Astros on Monday and maybe you had no clue who he was. Prior to the series-opener in Houston, the Cubs called up Jim Adduci, sending Tim Collins back to Iowa. This was after Kris Bryant and Jason Heyward collided at Wrigley Field on Sunday and were both out of the lineup Monday.
Unfortunately Adduci had to make his Cubs debut against Gerrit Cole, who dominated the Cubs after Anthony Rizzo’s two-run homer in the first. Adduci went 0-for-4, with three strikeouts. Cole struck out 12 in six innings.
Not really sure how long Adduci is going to stick around. Heyward is expected back Tuesday and Bryant could be back in a couple days? Hopefully. Please? Pretty please!
In 41 games at Triple-A this season, Adduci slashed .261/.306/.478, with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. The 34-year-old has played in 150 MLB games, breaking in with the Rangers in 2013. He also played for the Tigers in 2017-18.
Adduci was drafted by the Marlins in 2003 in the 42nd round.
I mean, that’s pretty cool. You’re drafted out of high school as a late-round pick and you stick with your dream and eventually make it the show. Good for Jim.
Side note. Brandon Morrow was picked in the 40th round of the 2003 draft. So far, Adduci’s played in more games for the Cubs in 2019.
