Visualising natural attractions within national parks: Preferences of tourists for photographs with different visual characteristics

Plos.org

by Lei Zhu, Lloyd S. Davis, Anna Carr

To explore what types of photographs are more helpful means to interpret natural attractions within national parks, this study focused on the relationship between the photographs with different visual characteristics and their perceived visual appeal. A photograph-based Q method was adopted. Results confirmed the visual quality of a photograph was the most important characteristic that determined its perceived attractiveness; those photographs with a... Читать дальше...

Density dependence can obscure nonlethal effects of disturbance on life history of medium-sized cetaceans

Plos.org

by Vincent Hin, John Harwood, André M. de Roos

Nonlethal disturbance of animals can cause behavioral and physiological changes that affect individual health status and vital rates, with potential consequences at the population level. Predicting these population effects remains a major challenge in ecology and conservation. Monitoring fitness-related traits may improve detection of upcoming population changes, but the extent to which individual traits are reliable indicators of disturbance exposure is not well understood... A finite volume-based model for the hydrothermal behavior of soil under freeze–thaw cycles

Plos.org

by Tianfei Hu, Tengfei Wang

Freeze–thaw cycles in soil are driven by water migration, phase transitions, and heat transfer, which themselves are closely coupled variables in the natural environment. To simulate this complex periglacial process at different time and length scales, a multi-physics model was established by solving sets of equations describing fluid flow and heat transfer, and a dynamic equilibrium equation for phase changes in moisture. This model considers the effects of water–ice... Читать дальше...

Assessing the appropriateness of the Moving Epidemic Method and WHO Average Curve Method for the syndromic surveillance of acute respiratory infection in Mauritius

Plos.org

by Mohabeer Teeluck, Atsushi Samura

Introduction

Mauritius introduced Acute respiratory infection (ARI) syndromic surveillance in 2007. The Moving Epidemic Method (MEM) and the World Health Organization Average Curve Method (WHO ACM) have been used widely in several countries to establish thresholds to determine the seasonality of acute respiratory infections. This study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of these tools for ARI syndromic surveillance in Mauritius, where two or more waves are observed. Читать дальше...

The benefits of coronavirus suppression: A cost-benefit analysis of the response to the first wave of COVID-19 in the United States

Plos.org

by James Broughel, Michael Kotrous

This paper estimates the benefits and costs of state suppression policies to “bend the curve” during the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States. We employ an approach that values benefits and costs in terms of additions or subtractions to total production. Relative to a baseline in which only the infected and at-risk populations mitigate the spread of coronavirus, we estimate that total benefits of suppression policies to economic output are between... Short Report: Adult Aedes abundance and risk of dengue transmission

Plos.org

by Janet Ong, Joel Aik, Lee Ching Ng

Dengue is transmitted mainly by the adult female Aedes aegypti mosquito. However, little is known about the impact of adult Aedes abundance on the risk of dengue transmission. Here we analysed nationally representative dengue case and vector surveillance data collected from Singapore, to determine the effect of adult Aedes abundance on the risk of dengue transmission. A case was an area with active dengue transmission as indicated by the presence of dengue cluster. Читать дальше...

Histone tails cooperate to control the breathing of genomic nucleosomes

Plos.org

by Jan Huertas, Hans Robert Schöler, Vlad Cojocaru

Genomic DNA is packaged in chromatin, a dynamic fiber variable in size and compaction. In chromatin, repeating nucleosome units wrap 145–147 DNA basepairs around histone proteins. Genetic and epigenetic regulation of genes relies on structural transitions in chromatin which are driven by intra- and inter-nucleosome dynamics and modulated by chemical modifications of the unstructured terminal tails of histones. Here we demonstrate how the... Читать дальше...
