The Mathematical Model of the Mind

Eurekalert.org

(World Scientific) Have over a hundred years of brain research revealed all its secrets? An incredibly large body of knowledge and understanding of brain and mind does not seem to have eliminated the sense of a missing link connecting it all. Professor Yoram Baram's latest publication was motivated by a realization that it is the synergy of certain mathematical concepts that holds the key to a more comprehensive and complete understanding of cortical function and behavior.

Passing the acid test: New, low-pH system recycles more carbon into valuable products

Eurekalert.org

(University of Sydney) An engineering researcher from the University of Sydney, in collaboration with a team at the University of Toronto, has developed an electrochemical system that coverts a greater amount of CO2 into valuable products, such as ethylene and ethanol. These are used in everyday materials, from plastic to Lycra.

Elevating African cichlid fish as a scientific model of social disorders

Eurekalert.org

(University of Houston) With social disorders, like autism, people suffer from an inability to respond to social cues. Interestingly, African Cichlid fish are excellent at responding to social cues, building social structures within minutes. A UH researcher is linking the two together, examining the genes and cells of the fish to learn more about social dysfunction.

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation announces 2021 Physician-Scientist Awardees

Eurekalert.org

(Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation) Five scientists with exceptional promise and novel approaches to fighting cancer have been named the 2021 recipients of the Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award. The awardees were selected through a highly competitive and rigorous process by a scientific committee comprised of leading cancer researchers who are themselves physician-scientists.

Solar energy and pollinator conservation: A path for real impact?

Eurekalert.org

(Entomological Society of America) Amid the steady growth of solar energy production in the United States, pollinator conservation at solar installations has become an appealing secondary pursuit, but the long-term success of such efforts remains to be seen. In a new article published today in the journal Environmental Entomology, a group of entomologists say pairing solar energy with pollinator habitat offers great promise, but scientific evaluation and meaningful standards will be key to making it a true win-win combination.

Mason 4C receives funding for Medical Society Consortium On Climate & Health

Eurekalert.org

(George Mason University) George Mason University's Center for Climate Change Communication (Mason 4C) received $150,000 from HT, LLC for the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health. The Consortium, a program of Mason 4C, is a partnership of medical societies, including the National Medical Association (NMA), affiliated state-level clinician groups, and public health organizations. This funding began in April 2021 and will end in late March 2022.

North Atlantic right whales have gotten smaller since the 1980s

Eurekalert.org

(Cell Press) Whales are largely protected from direct catch, but many populations' numbers still remain far below what they once were. A study published in the journal Current Biology on June 3 suggests that, in addition to smaller population sizes, those whales that survive are struggling. As evidence, they find that right whales living in the North Atlantic today are significantly shorter than those born 30 to 40 years ago.

UN urges intense restoration of nature to address climate and biodiversity crises

Eurekalert.org

(Terry Collins Assoc) Launching the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a new UN report says that to address climate change, loss of nature and pollution, the world must deliver on existing commitments to restore at least 1 billion degraded hectares of land -- an area comparable to China - in the next decade and add similar commitments for oceans. The report documents the urgent need for restoration, the financial investment required, and the potential returns for people and nature.

New technology 'listens' for endangered right whales

Eurekalert.org

(University of East Anglia) Researchers at the University of East Anglia have developed technology that will help to protect North American right whales, one of the world's most endangered marine species. The new techniques can remove unwanted noises from recordings, thereby increasing the reliability of detecting right whales before they reach close proximity to large vessels. This can both protect animals and avoid costly shutdowns of offshore operations.

Mixed farming methods could reduce US emissions and increase productivity

Eurekalert.org

(PLOS) Small-scale mixed-use agriculture that avoids synthetic fertilizers in favor of manure could eliminate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions if established across the United States' 100 million hectares of lush high quality cropland, according to a study by Gidon Eshel, publishing 3rd June 2021 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology. The minor catch: beef consumption would need to decrease, but by only 20%.
