Prior COVID-19 infection reduces infection risk for up to 10 months

Eurekalert.org

For the study, published in Lancet Healthy Longevity, researchers looked at rates of Covid-19 infections between October and February among more than 2,000 care home residents and staff, comparing those who had evidence of a previous infection up to 10 months earlier, as determined by antibody testing, with those who had not been previously infected.

Studies reveal skull as unexpected source of brain immunity

Eurekalert.org

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have discovered that the immune cells that protect the brain and spinal cord come primarily from the skull. The finding opens up the possibility of developing therapies to target such cells as a way to prevent or treat brain conditions.

Arctic sea ice thinning faster than expected

Eurekalert.org

Sea ice thickness is inferred by measuring the height of the ice above the water, and this measurement is distorted by snow weighing the ice floe down. Scientists adjust for this using a map of snow depth in the Arctic that is decades out of date. In the new study, researchers swapped this map for the results of a new computer model designed to estimate snow depth as it varies year to year.

Puppies are wired to communicate with people, study shows

Eurekalert.org

Dogs may have earned the title "man's best friend" because of how good they are at interacting with people. Those social skills may be present shortly after birth rather than learned, a new study by University of Arizona researchers suggests.

Mangrove Root Model May Hold the Key to Preventing Coastal Erosion

Eurekalert.org

How mangrove roots interact with water flow is believed to be a key element in mitigating coastal erosion. Researchers are the first to quantify the optimal mangrove root hydrodynamic with a predictive model, which provides insight into the sediment transport and erosion processes that govern the evolution of the shapes of shorelines. Results can provide useful guidance for coastal managers restoring estuarine mangrove forests or planting mangroves as part of living shoreline stabilization.

Breast cancer patients embrace integrative health during treatment

Eurekalert.org

Nearly three-quarters of breast cancer patients (73%) report using at least one type of complementary medicine after cancer diagnosis, while oncologists believe that less than half (43%) of patients are using these approaches during cancer care. These and other findings from a national survey of oncologists and breast cancer patients were released in conjunction with the 2021 ASCO Annual Meeting. The study found that doctors report discussing integrative health with only about half of patients, leading... Читать дальше...

Milk makeover: A great start for a healthy heart

Eurekalert.org

A dash of milk could make all the difference to a healthy heart as new research from the University of South Australia finds that people who regularly consume milk have a lower risk of heart disease.

Is Earth's core lopsided? Strange goings-on in our planet's interior

Eurekalert.org

Seismic waves generated by earthquakes travel through Earth's solid iron inner core faster in the direction of the rotation axis than along the equator. UC Berkeley scientists created a core growth model to explain this. To fit seismic data, the model predicts that asymmetric growth of the core leads to crystal movement that preferentially aligns iron-nickel crystals north-south. The model implies that the core is only 0.5-1.5 billion years old, a fraction of Earth's age.

Key to landing a job after college? Internships, study abroad, undergrad research and more

Eurekalert.org

College students who engaged in four or more high-impact practices such as study abroad or internships have a 70% chance of either enrolling in graduate school or finding a full-time job after graduating with a bachelor's degree, finds a new University at Buffalo study. These practices - such as study abroad, internships, undergraduate research, community service, first-year seminars and capstone courses - have the greatest influence on college success, regardless of student or family background.

Quantum-optically integrated light cage on a chip

Eurekalert.org

Controlling coherent interaction between optical fields and quantum systems in scalable, integrated platforms is essential for quantum technologies. A German-British research team has developed an on-chip hollow-core light cage that could provide a platform for quantum-storage and quantum-nonlinear applications. Showing stable non-degrading performance and extreme versatility, the laterally accessible light cage could be a compelling candidate for all-on-chip, integrable, low-cost, vapor-based photon delay.

3D printed micro-optics for quantum technology

Eurekalert.org

Making quantum networks a reality relies crucially on building efficient optical fiber-based quantum light sources. Here, scientists in Germany present an advanced manufacturing approach to accomplish this task. Femtosecond 3D printing is used to create complex micrometer-sized optics to both enhance the single-photon extraction efficiency of semiconductor quantum dots and couple their emission into single-mode optical fibers. This compact on-chip solution enables high coupling efficiency into a... Читать дальше...

CNIC scientists identify essential factors for limb formation

Eurekalert.org

Scientists at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC), have identified Meis transcription factors as essential biomolecules for the formation and antero-posterior patterning of the limbs during embryonic development.

Bilingualism as a natural therapy for autistic children

Eurekalert.org

Autism spectrum has a particular impact on social interaction. Bilingual families with an autistic child often tend to forego the use of one of the home languages, so as not to further complicate the development of their child's communicative skills. A team led by UNIGE has shown that bilingualism allows autistic children to partially compensate for deficits in theory of mind and executive functions, which are at the root of many of their challenges.
