To the editor: Thankful for heroes among us

On Memorial Day, my husband and I visited my father’s grave at Calvary Cemetery. As I am every year, I was brought to tears at the sight of so many graveside flags, including the one remembering my dad’s service as a 19-year-old soldier in the United States Army in World War II.

George J. Murnen, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at his alma mater, the University of Toledo, whose interest in students and bridges and concrete fueled a 50-year teaching career, died Sunday of respiratory arrest in ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He was 91.

Cops launch helpline to counsel citizens in distress

In a bid to help citizens in distress, the police department has launched a helpline service. City police commissioner, Shamsher Singh on Wednesday announced that the helpline 70699 44100 and 1096 will cater to any person who is in trouble and needs counselling.

Bernice Mensah, a member of the Worcester State University women's indoor and outdoor track & field teams, has been voted the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's athletic directors.

[Women's Basketball] Pringle Named Next Head Coach of Bethel Women's Basketball

California Pacific Conference Men's Basketball 

The Bethel College athletic department has announced the appointment of Derrick Pringle, Jr. as the next head coach of the women's basketball team. Pringle becomes the 14th head coach in the program's history, dating back to 1973.  Bethel competes within the 13-school Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.



'Floating' microgrids: Optimizing naval ships' power systems

(Lehigh University) Supported by two Office of Naval Research grants totaling $900,000, Wenxin Liu, of Lehigh University, will continue research into the advanced control of power systems through algorithmic design and hardware experimentation. He will examine real-time optimal power flow control in power electronic power distribution systems and investigate the coordination of heterogeneous generators within a naval ship's power system. Both projects could lead to improvements in civilian microgrid technology.

People who use methamphetamine likely to report multiple chronic conditions

People who use methamphetamine are more likely to have health conditions, mental illness, and substance use disorders than people who do not use the drug, according to a new study by researchers at the Center for Drug Use and HIV/HCV Research (CDUHR) at NYU School of Global Public Health.
