Much like the brief battle, the first military commander to face the German Wehrmacht is essentially a forgotten hero.
Most history books will tell you that the Second World War began on September 1, 1939, and ended on May 8, 1945. Of course, history is never so simple, and the last battle of World War II in Europe actually occurred sixteen days after Germany's surrender.
