Crosstalk between guanosine nucleotides regulates cellular heterogeneity in protein synthesis during nutrient limitation

Plos.org

by Simon Diez, Molly Hydorn, Abigail Whalen, Jonathan Dworkin

Phenotypic heterogeneity of microbial populations can facilitate survival in dynamic environments by generating sub-populations of cells that may have differential fitness in a future environment. Bacillus subtilis cultures experiencing nutrient limitation contain distinct sub-populations of cells exhibiting either comparatively high or low protein synthesis activity. This heterogeneity requires the production of phosphorylated... Читать дальше...

Diet-responsive transcriptional regulation of insulin in a single neuron controls systemic metabolism

Plos.org

by Ava Handley, Qiuli Wu, Tessa Sherry, Rebecca Cornell, Roger Pocock

Metabolic homeostasis is coordinated through a robust network of signaling pathways acting across all tissues. A key part of this network is insulin-like signaling, which is fundamental for surviving glucose stress. Here, we show that Caenorhabditis elegans fed excess dietary glucose reduce insulin-1 (INS-1) expression specifically in the BAG glutamatergic sensory neurons. We demonstrate that INS-1 expression in the BAG... Читать дальше...

Multiple molecular events underlie stochastic switching between 2 heritable cell states in fungi

Plos.org

by Naomi Ziv, Lucas R. Brenes, Alexander Johnson

Eukaryotic transcriptional networks are often large and contain several levels of feedback regulation. Many of these networks have the ability to generate and maintain several distinct transcriptional states across multiple cell divisions and to switch between them. In certain instances, switching between cell states is stochastic, occurring in a small subset of cells of an isogenic population in a seemingly homogenous environment. Given the... Diseases All Woodmont Alumni from 1971 to 2021 Should Immediately Be Screened For

MCSWEENEY’S

It’s a ritual as time-honored among teenagers as prom or drinking too much and crashing your parents’ Corolla into the window of a Mexican restaurant—glossy catalogs from colleges arriving by the dozen each spring. Aside from the faint odor of kiwi bubblegum vape smoke, Woodmont College’s catalog, Welcome to Woodmont College, is superficially not unlike the others. But there’s no school quite like Woodmont College (no longer “university” due to a court order). And every page of its catalog is proof of this uniqueness... Читать дальше...

Platinum jewellery continuing to drive 25% of platinum demand

Engineeringnews.co.za

Several reports published during Platinum Week indicate that in 2021, platinum jewellery consumed anywhere between 1.6-million ounces to two-million ounces of platinum, which makes it still the second demand source after automotive, coming in at around 25% of total platinum demand. Positive momentum for platinum jewellery is being maintained in the US, which shone like a star in 2021, and Japan, where platinum jewellery commands more than half of all jewellery sales.

Is the Johnny Cash Image on Water Tower in Arkansas Urinating?

Kpel965.com

Is the man in black peeing from a water tower in his birthplace Kingsland, Arkansas? Or is it just an optical illusion? Nope. That's real water, that's a real image of Johnny Cash and that's a really delicate area from which the water is spewing. Continue reading…
