Data-informed deep optimization

Plos.org

by Lulu Zhang, Zhi-Qin John Xu, Yaoyu Zhang

Motivated by the impressive success of deep learning in a wide range of scientific and industrial applications, we explore in this work the application of deep learning into a specific class of optimization problems lacking explicit formulas for both objective function and constraints. Such optimization problems exist in many design problems, e.g., rotor profile design, in which objective and constraint values are available only through experiment or simulation. Читать дальше...

Intense pulsed light improves signs and symptoms of dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction: A randomized controlled study

Plos.org

by Rolando Toyos, Neel R. Desai, Melissa Toyos, Steven J. Dell

Purpose

To compare the safety and efficacy of intense pulsed light (IPL) followed by meibomian gland expression (MGX), against monotherapy of MGX.

Methods

Patients with moderate to severe meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) were 1:1 randomized to 4 sessions of intense pulse light + MGX at 2-week intervals, or 4 sessions of Sham + MGX at 2-week intervals. Both patients and examiners were blinded to the allocation. Outcome measures... Читать дальше...

Evaluation of Melia azedarach extract-loaded poly (vinyl alcohol)/pectin hydrogel for burn wound healing

Plos.org

by Jun Seung Lee, Kyung Hoon Sun, Yongjin Park

Background

In this study, a hydrogel comprising poly (vinyl alcohol)/pectin (PVA/PET) was prepared by the addition of Melia azedarach extract for epithelial restoration. M. azedarach extract (MAE) contains volatile organic plant-derived compounds with antimicrobial properties. MAE has a variety of physiological properties, including antimicrobial, insecticidal, and anti-inflammatory activity. This study aimed to investigate whether MAE-loaded... Читать дальше...

Identifying corridors of river recovery in coastal NSW Australia, for use in river management decision support and prioritisation systems

Plos.org

by Danelle Agnew, Kirstie Fryirs

By connecting corridors of river recovery, resilience can be built into river systems to mitigate against future floods and droughts driven by anthropogenic disturbance or climate extremes. However, identifying where these corridors can be built is still lacking in river management practice. The Open Access NSW River Styles database contains comprehensive information on geomorphic river condition and recovery potential. The database can be used to systematically... Читать дальше...

Exploring EEG spectral and temporal dynamics underlying a hand grasp movement

Plos.org

by Sandeep Bodda, Shyam Diwakar

For brain-computer interfaces, resolving the differences between pre-movement and movement requires decoding neural ensemble activity in the motor cortex’s functional regions and behavioural patterns. Here, we explored the underlying neural activity and mechanisms concerning a grasped motor task by recording electroencephalography (EEG) signals during the execution of hand movements in healthy subjects. The grasped movement included different tasks; reaching the target... Читать дальше...

Long-term outcomes after discontinuing biological drugs and tofacitinib in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A prospective cohort study

Plos.org

by Shunsuke Mori, Akitomo Okada, Tomohiro Koga, Yukitaka Ueki

Objective

This study examined long-term outcomes of biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) and tofacitinib discontinuation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods

Ninety-seven RA patients who desired drug discontinuation after sustained remission or low disease activity for at least 48 weeks due to stable treatment with biological drugs or tofacitinib were enrolled into this study. All patients... Читать дальше...

The thematic role of extracellular loop of VraG in activation of the membrane sensor GraS in a cystic fibrosis MRSA strain differs in nuance from the CA-MRSA strain JE2

Plos.org

by Junho Cho, William F. C. Rigby, Ambrose L. Cheung

Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) often suffer recurrent bronchial bacterial infections that lead to deterioration of lung function over time. The infections in CF patients are often due to S. aureus and P. aeruginosa that colonize the airways. Significantly, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) makes it challenging for treatment in CF patients due to its feature of multiple antibiotic resistance. In bronchial airways, cationic antimicrobial... Читать дальше...
