Vowel speech recognition from rat electroencephalography using long short-term memory neural network

Plos.org

by Jinsil Ham, Hyun-Joon Yoo, Jongin Kim, Boreom Lee

Over the years, considerable research has been conducted to investigate the mechanisms of speech perception and recognition. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a powerful tool for identifying brain activity; therefore, it has been widely used to determine the neural basis of speech recognition. In particular, for the classification of speech recognition, deep learning-based approaches are in the spotlight because they can automatically learn... Читать дальше...

Assessing the impact of ambient temperature on the risk of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Guangdong, China: New insight from the disease severity and burden

Plos.org

by Zhicheng Du, Wangjian Zhang, Shicheng Yu, Shao Lin, Yuantao Hao

Background

The association between the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and ambient temperature has been well documented. Although the severity of symptoms is an important indicator of disease burden and varies significantly across cases, it usually was ignored in previous studies, potentially leading to biased estimates of the health impact of temperature.

Methods

We estimated the disability-adjusted... Читать дальше...

Reconstructing the history of founder events using genome-wide patterns of allele sharing across individuals

Plos.org

by Rémi Tournebize, Gillian Chu, Priya Moorjani

Founder events play a critical role in shaping genetic diversity, fitness and disease risk in a population. Yet our understanding of the prevalence and distribution of founder events in humans and other species remains incomplete, as most existing methods require large sample sizes or phased genomes. Thus, we developed ASCEND that measures the correlation in allele sharing between pairs of individuals across the genome to infer the age and strength of founder events. Читать дальше...

Mob4-dependent STRIPAK involves the chaperonin TRiC to coordinate myofibril and microtubule network growth

Plos.org

by Joachim Berger, Silke Berger, Peter D. Currie

Myofibrils of the skeletal muscle are comprised of sarcomeres that generate force by contraction when myosin-rich thick filaments slide past actin-based thin filaments. Surprisingly little is known about the molecular processes that guide sarcomere assembly in vivo, despite deficits within this process being a major cause of human disease. To overcome this knowledge gap, we undertook a forward genetic screen coupled with reverse genetics to... Читать дальше...
