Change management in higher education: A sequential mixed methods study exploring employees’ perception

Plos.org

by Rima Ezzeddine, Farah Otaki, Sohaib Darwish, Reem AlGurg

Background

Higher education institutions need to put change management as a pivotal part of their strategy. The challenge is to effectively contextualize existing change management models to the respective work environment. Failing to properly adapt existing models to match the intricacies of the environment could lead to plenty of setbacks. For such a contextualization to take place, gauging employees’ engagement and satisfaction becomes of paramount importance. Читать дальше...

An evolutionary game analysis of digital transformation of multiagents in digital innovation ecosystems

Plos.org

by Baotong Liu, Hua Zou, Hao Qin, Huimin Ji, Yongquan Guo

In an innovation ecosystem, the digital transformation decisions and game mechanisms of entities are paramount issues to be studied. Consequently, this study constructs a digital transformation SD evolutionary game model based on expectancy theory and Lyapunov’s first law to address the above issues. The results demonstrate the following: (1) Digital technology empowerment benefits, spillover effects, and supervision benefits are positively... Читать дальше...

Evaluation of CRP as a marker for bacterial infection and malaria in febrile children at the Douala Gyneco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital

Plos.org

by Yembu Ngwengi, Guy Pascal Ngaba, Martine Nida, Dominique Enyama

Background

C reactive protein (CRP), a marker for the presence of inflammation, has been extensively studied for distinguishing bacterial from non-bacterial infection in febrile patients, but its role in excluding malaria in the febrile child has not been thoroughly evaluated.

Method

This was a cross-sectional study at the Douala Gyneco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital which included all patients between the ages of one month and 16 years presenting with fever. Читать дальше...

Schooling of light reflecting fish

Plos.org

by Assaf Pertzelan, Gil Ariel, Moshe Kiflawi

One of the hallmarks of the collective movement of large schools of pelagic fish are waves of shimmering flashes that propagate across the school, usually following an attack by a predator. Such flashes arise when sunlight is reflected off the specular (mirror-like) skin that characterizes many pelagic fishes, where it is otherwise thought to offer a means for camouflage in open waters. While it has been suggested that these ‘shimmering waves’... Читать дальше...

Characterization of factors that underlie transcriptional silencing in C. elegans oocytes

Plos.org

by Mezmur D. Belew, Emilie Chien, W. Matthew Michael

While it has been appreciated for decades that prophase-arrested oocytes are transcriptionally silenced on a global level, the molecular pathways that promote silencing have remained elusive. Previous work in C. elegans has shown that both topoisomerase II (TOP-2) and condensin II collaborate with the H3K9me heterochromatin pathway to silence gene expression in the germline during L1 starvation, and that the PIE-1 protein silences the genome in the P-lineage of early embryos. Neural activity induces strongly coupled electro-chemo-mechanical interactions and fluid flow in astrocyte networks and extracellular space—A computational study

Plos.org

by Marte J. Sætra, Ada J. Ellingsrud, Marie E. Rognes

The complex interplay between chemical, electrical, and mechanical factors is fundamental to the function and homeostasis of the brain, but the effect of electrochemical gradients on brain interstitial fluid flow, solute transport, and clearance remains poorly quantified. Here, via in-silico experiments based on biophysical modeling, we estimate water movement across astrocyte cell membranes, within astrocyte networks, and within the extracellular... Читать дальше...

Theoretical efficiency limits and speed-efficiency trade-off in myosin motors

Plos.org

by Andrej Vilfan, Andreja Šarlah

Muscle myosin is a non-processive molecular motor generates mechanical work when cooperating in large ensembles. During its cyle, each individual motor keeps attaching and detaching from the actin filament. The random nature of attachment and detachment inevitably leads to losses and imposes theoretical limits on the energetic efficiency. Here, we numerically determine the theoretical efficiency limit of a classical myosin model with a given number of mechano-chemical states. Читать дальше...
