Hulu orders series adaptation of Sally Rooney’s ‘Normal People’

Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel Normal People is being adapted for Hulu.

The book is being turned into a 12-episode half-hour drama, and will be directed Lenny Abrahamson (Room) and Hettie Macdonald (Doctor Who, Beautiful Thing).

Normal People focuses on the evolving relationship between Connell and Marianne, two Irish teens whose friendship borders on something more but is tested as they mature. While the book was released in the U.K. last year, it’s U.S. release in April picked up a new wave of fans who quickly became obsessed with the story’s characters and Rooney’s “millennial” voice. Rooney’s first book, Conversations with Friends, got a Taylor Swift bump earlier this month. Emily Ratajkowski praised it in April.

Hulu knew when to strike. A press release for the series states it will follow “the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.” Connell will be played by TV newcomer Paul Mescal and Marianne will be played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, who also stars in the upcoming BBC reboot of The War of the Worlds.

Normal People has reportedly started filming in Dublin, and it debuts in 2020.
