The Voting Rights Act suffered another body blow last week, with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit throwing out its own precedent. The VRA, once an example of bipartisan commitment to rectifying the historic injustices perpetrated against Black voters, has been degraded, piece by piece. In part, this is due to Donald Trump getting four years to stuff the federal judiciary with members of the right-wing Federalist Society, but none of this would have been possible if one Chief Justice... Videos glamourising disordered eating practices and body image concerns readily circulate on TikTok. Minimal empirical research has investigated the impact of TikTok content on body image and eating behaviour. The present study aimed to fill this gap in current research by examining the influence of pro-anorexia TikTok content on young women’s body image and degree of internalisation of beauty standards, whilst also exploring the impact of daily time... Scholars across disciplines and around the world have diverted research attention to rising income inequalities across groups and strategies to reduce them. The literature has broadly identified human capital and social capital as two potential tools to facilitate economic mobility and to reduce inequalities. However, it is not known whether these tools work equally well for stigmatized groups, particularly in societies with systemic inequalities. Читать дальше...

Traditional method of determining closure and initiation stress of fractured rocks by analyzing the stress-strain curve has problems such as strong subjectivity and large errors. This study utilized the rock closure stress values and onset stress values determined by three traditional methods, namely, axial strain method, fracture volume method and empirical value taking method, as the base database. The Student t distribution theory... Читать дальше...

Obtaining high-quality DNA suitable for long-read sequencing can be difficult for many types of tissues and cells, and it is a key step in current genomic studies. The challenge is even greater when it comes to isolating genomic DNA from mammalian spermatozoa, as DNA is tightly packed into a cell with a robust membrane rich in disulfide bonds. Here we describe a method for isolating high molecular weight DNA from Bovine commercial semen straws. Читать дальше...

The ovarian KGN granulosa-like tumour cell line is commonly used as a model for human granulosa cells, especially since it produces steroid hormones. To explore this further, we identified genes that were differentially expressed by KGN cells compared to primary human granulosa cells using three public RNA sequence datasets. Of significance, we identified that the expression of the antioxidant gene TXNRD1 (thioredoxin reductase 1) was extremely high in KGN cells. Читать дальше...
