Kyle Schwarber Found A Fun Way To Let Bullpen Know Cubs Got Kimbrel During Game
Anthony Rizzo said that he knew before the start of Wednesday’s game that the Cubs were signing Craig Kimbrel, but he couldn’t tell anyone because it wasn’t out yet. But it was Kyle Schwarber who let the current Cubs bullpen know that the team had just acquired its new closer.
The news was broken by Ken Rosenthal early on in the Cubs game and by the middle innings fans knew it was a three-year, $43 million deal with a fourth year vesting option. Len Kasper brought it up during the broadcast and fans at Wrigley Field obviously knew about the signing.
Schwarber found out during the game and then he let the bullpen know by doing Kimbrel’s arm thingy.
Kimbrel will reportedly make $10 million this season and $16 million in 2020 and 2021. His contract with the Cubs also includes a $1 million buyout of a fourth year vesting option, according to Jeff Passan.
Anyway, want to keep a secret? Tell Rizzo.
This was probably Rizzo in the clubhouse.
After the Cubs escaped with a 9-8 win, players couldn’t hide their excitement.
Kimbrel will reportedly take his physical today. It’s still unclear how long it will take for him to join the Cubs bullpen, but it should be right before the All-Star break at the latest.
In the meantime, just have Schwarber on the mound doing the Kimbrel arm thing to intimidate hitters. Probably more effective than Brad Brach.
