1 Coup attempt: Ethiopia’s leaders say they foiled a coup attempt in a region north of the capital, Addis Ababa, and the country’s military chief was shot dead, the prime minister said Sunday. The failed coup in the Amhara region was led by a high-ranking military officer and others within the military on Saturday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in an address carried by the state broadcaster. Soldiers attacked a building in which a meeting of regional officials was taking place. The regional president and at least two other officials were among the victims of the attack. Most of perpetrators were captured, said Ahmed’s spokesman. The attack was linked was linked to the subsequent assassination of army chief Gen. Seare Mekonnen, who was shot dead by a bodyguard at his residence in Addis Ababa.
2 Deadly storm: At least 14 people were killed Sunday when a tent collapsed during a severe storm in India’s Rajasthan state, officials said. Around 50 others were injured when the tent failed during a Hindu ceremony in the village of Barmer. Western Rajasthan state chief minister Ashok Gehlot said he has ordered an investigation into the incident.
3 Fatal fire: Indonesian police have arrested the owner and two managers of a factory in North Sumatra that was engulfed by a fire that killed 30 people. The three face five years in prison if found guilty of negligence leading to deaths, police said Sunday. The business was operating from a house in the North Sumatra district of Langkat and reportedly made match sticks and lighters. Its female employees were trapped in Friday’s blaze by a locked door. Five children died in the inferno and only four people escaped, Atmaja said.
