1 Oppressive heat: The East Coast sweated through searing temperatures and humidity levels again Sunday. The heat caused a New Jersey drawbridge to get stuck open and led to some gallows humor in a Braintree, Mass., where police implored criminals to take it easy until the weather cools. The central part of the country, meanwhile, got some relief. In New Jersey, the Oceanic Bridge over the Navesink River was closed Saturday night after it got stuck open. Monmouth County officials say heat caused expansion of the metal encasing the drawbridge, which is a popular route for residents and beachgoers. New York City directed office buildings to set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees to reduce strain on its electrical grid.

2 Baby killed: A couple has been arrested on suspicion of strangling their newborn to death at a hospital in Oxnard (Ventura County). Officers were summoned to St. John’s Medical Center on Friday to investigate the baby’s death. Andrea Torralba, 20, and her boyfriend David Villa, 21, notified the medical staff that their hours-old son was unresponsive, said police Sgt. Brandon Ordelheide. The staff tried to revive the infant but he succumbed to his injuries. Ordelheide said doctors determined the newborn was strangled. Torralba and Villa were arrested for investigation of assault on a child resulting in death. The sergeant said that when questioned by detectives, the two said they didn’t want the baby.

3 Parents threatened: A Pennsylvania school district was admonished for sending letters to parents warning that children could end up in foster care if overdue school lunch bills are not paid.
