1 Pakistan bombing: A female suicide bomber struck outside a hospital Sunday as the wounded were being brought in from an earlier shooting against police. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the assault that killed at least nine people and wounded 30 others, some critically. Police in Dera Ismail Khan said gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on police in a residential area, killing two. The bomber then struck at the entrance to the hospital, killing another four officers and three civilians. Pakistan’s military has carried out major operations in recent years against the Taliban and other militants in areas along the porous border with Afghanistan. The violence has declined, but the militants still mount attacks, mainly against security forces and religious minorities.

2 Portugal fires: About 1,800 firefighters fought to contain wildfires Sunday in central Portugal that have injured 20 people, including eight firefighters. The fires broke out Saturday across three fronts in the district of Castelo Branco, about 125 miles northeast of Lisbon, the capital. State broadcaster RTP televised images of flames consuming wooded areas of the rural region that has seen recurrent wildfires in Portugal’s hot, dry summer months. RTP showed firefighters hosing down a line of advancing flames as they rapidly approached houses in the village of Sarnadas while water-dumping aircraft swooped overhead. While most of the injured suffered smoke inhalation, while one person was hospitalized with burns.
