Low fares flying away with Hong Kong Airlines departure

Hong Kong Airlines announced last Friday it will suspend flights between its Hong Kong hub and SFO after October 4, 2019. For the last year and a half, the carrier brought fresh competition to the busy SFO-HKG route, and fares dropped precipitously.

With it flying away, travelers could see airfares between SFO and Hong Kong jump up from record lows-- last fall, they hit rock bottom at just $350 roundtrip. That's crazy cheap for a 14-hour transpac flight. And it ends up those fares were just too good to be true for passengers, and not sustainable for the airlines. Fares are still a good bargain however, running at about $500 roundtrip for fall flights.
