Campaign to focus on substandard housing in Alabama

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — The head of a program that fights poverty in rural Alabama is living outside a church for a few days to draw attention to the problem of substandard housing.

Lisa Pierce of Alabama Rural Ministry will stay in a small shack outside Auburn United Methodist Church as part of an awareness program called "No More Shacks."

Pierce tells the Opelika-Auburn News she expects a good bit of foot traffic over the weekend thanks to the Auburn University football game on Saturday. She says the shack is a visual way to for people to understand what substandard housing looks like.

The campaign raised $116,000 last year, and the ministry hopes to raise even more in donations this year.
