[Football] Mechanics Start Slow but Finish Big in Win Over George Mason University

Williamson didn't start out too quickly on offense against George Mason University in Saturday's game, going three and out on their first drive, but they more than made up for things from there as they amassed 633 yards of total offense against the Patriots in racing to a 39-18 win.  The game was just the second one played on the school's new Betty and Russ Harvey 5W0 Field.

After the slow start, Williamson was able to flip the field on the Patriots off a 56-yard punt by Anthony Ellis (FR/Aston, PA) that put George Mason at their five-yard line.  They went three and out and shanked a punt to give Williamson the ball at the Patriots 39-yard line.  They then used an 8-play drive, capped off by a Nick Layden (FR/Folsom, PA) 4-yard touchdown run to go up 7-0.

Whereas there were only seven points scored in the first quarter, the two team combined to score 38 in the second quarter! Layden added a second four-yard touchdown run but George Mason came right back on a 36-yard scoop and score fumble return from Jack Riegal to pull to within 13-6.

Williamson then added back-to back touchdowns.   The first was on a nifty 63-yard run by David Williams (SR/Philadelphia, PA).  The second was on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Layden to Giuseppe Pollino, to put Williamson up 27-6 with under four minutes left in the half.

George Mason was far from done however, as they showed their resiliency, scoring on two TD receptions by Williamson Marrow III from Brandon Hamm in a 1:15 minute span to close to within 27-18 at half.   The second one came after a Williamson turnover right before half.

From there the second half proved to be all Williamson, as both their offense and defense came up big.  Their defense held George Mason to just 197 yards of total offense, while forcing two turnovers.  The Mechanic's offense showed great balance with 339 yards rushing and another 294 yards passing.

Leading the way on the ground with a monster game for Williamson was David Williams.  He rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown, and also hauled in 16-yard touchdown reception.  Michael Moore (FR/Prospect Park, PA) added 58 yards rushing, while Nick Layden added 56 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Layden also had a monster game through the air, as he went 14-22 for 294 yards and three touchdowns.  Giuseppe Pollino had five receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns, while Lamont Sudler (FR/Eddystone, PA) added four  receptions for 99 yards.  Williamson's offense line combinations of Shane Luedtke (FR/Aston, PA), Deikyere Miller, Sal Carmolingo, Damier Kimp (SR/Philadelphia, PA), Hunter Thornton (SR/Upper Chichester, PA) and Zach Skomsky did a great job of opening things up for the offense.

Defensively, Shane Dougherty (JR/Ridley Park, PA) and Jack Gibson (SR/Rutledge, PA) both picked off passes, giving Williamson six in two games.

Williamson moves to 2-0 on the year, while George Mason falls to 1-1.  Williamson next takes on Thaddeus Stevens next Saturday at 12:00 P.M. on Harvey Field.
