1 Royal visit: Britain’s Prince William and wife Kate toured Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore on Thursday, where they undertook an emotional visit to a cancer hospital previously visited by William’s mother, the late Princess Diana. The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center was started in the early 1990s by the cricket-hero-turned-politician Imran Khan, who is now Pakistan’s prime minister, and whose first wife, Jemima Goldsmith, was a friend of the late princess. William and Kate’s visit brought back memories for many Pakistanis who still love the late Lady Diana for her humanitarian work.
2 Cuba seeks dollars: The Cuban government announced economic measures this week to seek dollars in a bid to stay afloat in the midst of an acute financial crisis triggered by its dependence on Venezuelan oil and new U.S. sanctions. On Tuesday, Cuban Vice President Salvador Mesa and several ministers announced on television that the government was going to lower the prices of household appliances and other items on the condition that Cubans pay in dollars. The move is an attempt to obtain a larger percentage of remittances sent from abroad.
3 U.S. tariffs: European producers of premium specialty agricultural products like French wine, Italian Parmesan and Spanish olives are facing a U.S. tariff hike due Friday with a mix of trepidation and indignation at being dragged into a trade war they feel they have little to do with. The tariffs on $7.5 billion on a range of European goods were approved by the World Trade Organization in Geneva as compensation for illegal EU subsidies to plane maker Airbus, which has four shareholders — Spain, France, Germany and Britain The U.S. has some leeway in deciding what goods it puts tariffs on.
