Despite 53 shots on goal, Sharks fall to Jets
Nikolaj Ehlers’ tie-breaking goal at 18:36 enabled the Jets to beat the Sharks 3-2 at SAP Center on Friday.
Despite putting on a season-high 53 shots, San Jose lost for a fourth straight time.
The Sharks host Vancouver on Saturday.
Tomas Hertl scored his fourth goal of the season 49 seconds into the third period during a delayed penalty. Later in the period, Kevin Labanc hit the crossbar and Evander Kane was denied on a breakaway.
To suggest the Sharks deserved better in the second period is an understatement. San Jose outshot Winnipeg 28-9 in the period, including 12 on a pair of power plays, yet trailed 2-1 after surrendering a tie-breaking goal 31 seconds after having one of their own overturned.
San Jose tied the game at 3:18 when Barclay Goodrow scored his fourth of the season. Goodrow scored in one motion on the rush from the left circle after stepping into a nice backhand pass from Jonny Brodzinski.
The goal tilted the ice in the Sharks’ favor, and they thought they had a 2-1 lead at 7:22 when Kane chipped a loose puck over Connor Hellebuyck.
But, following a Winnipeg challenge for goaltender interference, the call on the ice was overturned as video determined Labanc pushed Hellebuyck’s pad to impair his ability to play the position.
Half a minute later the Jets capitalized when Blake Wheeler lost Sharks defenseman Brent Burns and beat a sprawling Martin Jones for his fifth goal of the season at 7:53.
San Jose appeared poised to tie the game late in the period, but Hellebuyck turned away all eight shots during a Mathieu Perreault minor at 17:11.
The Sharks had a 39-15 advantage in shots after 40 minutes.
San Jose displayed flashes of the way they want to play in the first — enjoying more offensive-zone time thanks to a decent forecheck — but came out...
