State police investigate bodies found in Augusta apartment
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Police are investigating the deaths of a man and a woman in an apartment in Augusta.
The Augusta Police Department reports that an officer sent to the home for a welfare check heard a gunshot after knocking on the door. Officials found a dead man when they entered the apartment late Monday afternoon; they found a woman's body in another room.
Maine State Police are assisting in the investigation, and said there's no threat to the public.
The Kennebec Journal reported that paramedics entered the building after it was secured, at about 5 p.m., but they left without removing either body.
Crime scene workers were on the scene overnight. State police said further details would be released after autopsies, planned for either Tuesday or Wednesday.
