Rhode Island College adjunct professors seek higher pay

0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Adjunct professors at Rhode Island College say they’ve made little progress in their demands for a pay raise.

Professors say they have been negotiating for a 2.5% pay increase since their last contract expired in August 2018.

Adjunct faculty union president Deborah Kaspin tells WJAR-TV that the attorney representing the Council on Postsecondary Education has “refused to answer our call” to discuss a final settlement.

Kaspin says the adjunct professors earn $1,290 per class hour and are limited to eight class hours a semester. Their half-year salary is capped at $10,320.

She says that after accounting for grading and prep time, adjunct professors make less than $15 an hour.

The Council on Postsecondary Education did not return the station’s request for comment.
