A Bold QB Move is Pegged as Chicago Bears Ideal Offseason Trade

0

Chicago Bears fans know Ryan Pace by now. He is not the sort of GM to sit back and let the chips fall where they may. He’s aggressive and isn’t afraid to be bold when the situation calls for it. His moves for Mitch Trubisky and Khalil Mack are obvious examples. So if there is another big trade out there for him to make. One that he feels can push the Bears over the top towards a possible Super Bowl run? He isn’t the type to hesitate.

The big hurdle is whether he would entertain the idea of that trade being for a quarterback. He’s already stated once that he still believes in Trubisky and is prepared to keep him the starter in 2020. At the same time, there are rumblings around the organization that not everybody shares that belief. Hence why many view the Bears as a wild card team that could make an unexpected push to grab a veteran QB on the trade market.

Brett Sobleski of Bleacher Report is one of them.

When discussing ideal trade scenarios for every team, he had the same one for both the Carolina Panthers and Bears. A deal for Cam Newton.

“For the first time ever, the market could be flooded with starting-caliber quarterbacks. Maybe the organization doesn’t actively pursue any of the big-name free agents. At the same time, the Bears should quietly inquire about other potential possibilities like Cam Newton.

The Bears need to consider the Panthers quarterback for the opposite reasons Carolina might want to trade him. They’re in win-now mode, and the quarterback position is clearly holding them back. Newton could provide a spark to make another playoff push.

It’ll be costly, though.”

Chicago Bears move for Newton is too expensive

He wasn’t lying. Based on his own projections, it would cost the Bears one of their 2nd round picks in 2020 and their 1st round pick in 2021 in order to facilitate a trade for Newton. This would mean the franchise would end up going three-straight years without a pick in the 1st round. Not exactly the most advisable way to ensure the long-term stability of your franchise. While there is no denying that Newton has been a very good quarterback over the years, one could argue this is way too big of a price to pay.

For one, his health is now in question. The quarterback hasn’t played a full season since 2017, missing 16 combined games the past two years. Though set to turn 31-years old, his body has endured quite a beating in his career. It feels like it might be starting to break down.

Then there is the question of fit.

Though physically gifted, Newton is a particular type of quarterback. One who is most effective when he has a strong and dedicated rushing attack at his disposal. He isn’t the sort to just sit back in the pocket, survey the field and deliver. Given how head coach Matt Nagy likes to run a pass-first scheme, it doesn’t feel like those two would mesh too well.

Anything is possible, but this trade feels unlikely.
