Cheap Free Agent QBs Are a Bad Idea for Bears Says Latest Power Rankings

0

One common truth about the NFL is teams are rarely rewarded for half measures in any moves they make. They either need to go with conviction or don’t do it at all on players. This is true of both free agency and the draft. It’s no secret the Chicago Bears could be looking at a change of some kind at quarterback in the next month or so. The idea being they sign somebody on the market who can come in and either compete or outright replace Mitch Trubisky.

If so, it becomes a question of commitment. How dedicated is GM Ryan Pace to really doing this? Most presume he isn’t fully prepared to put the full-court press on Trubisky, wanting to give the former #2 pick one more year to finally realize his potential. This is why the general belief is he’ll settle for a cheap option of some kind. The NFL though warns against this idea. That is if the team actually wants to get better at the position.

According to NFL.com’s latest quarterback power rankings, most of the options who will likely be cheap either as free agents or trade options don’t exactly inspire confidence. In fact, none of them rank higher than Trubisky himself.

Andy Dalton? Tied for 30th with Trubisky.

Case Keenum? At 34th behind Joe Flacco.

Marcus Mariota? He’s 35th.

Nick Foles? An uninspiring 39th.

Chicago Bears need to be serious about a change or not bother

The reality is this. Aside from name value, it’s hard to imagine any of those guys coming in and doing enough in training camp to drive Trubisky out of his entrenched spot as the starter. The hope at that point would be of a sort of Ryan Tannehill situation. Trubisky ends up struggling and the veteran comes in and ends up doing well. The odds of that happening though aren’t that great. Tannehill was aided by a dominant running game. Something the Bears don’t have.

The reality is if they aren’t going to be serious about possibly replacing Trubisky, then the best thing for them to do is just avoid the controversy altogether. Keep Chase Daniel and devote every resource possible to improving the offense around the 25-year old. None of those guys with maybe the exception of Foles will win you a Super Bowl and Foles is likely out of reach due to his contract in Jacksonville.

If this team wants more certainty at quarterback, the truth is they’ll have to spend money to get it.
