Lincoln voters OK $290M bond measure; 2 new high schools

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln school district voters have approved a $290 million bond measure that will provide money for two new high schools among other building projects.

Unofficial results from Tuesday's count show more than 62% of voters backed the measure.

District officials had said overcrowding and growth in different corners of the city prompted the decision to build one high school in northwest Lincoln, to be opened in 2022, and one in southeast Lincoln, to be opened in 2023.

They'll be designed for half as many students as the district’s six existing high schools, but their core facilities will be large enough to handle expansion to a total population of 2,000 students each.

Other projects include a new elementary in northeast Lincoln, district athletic complexes at the new high schools and renovations and additions to other schools.
