Cubs Reliever Back With Team After Undergoing Heart Procedure
Left-handed reliever Brad Wieck had been away from the team for a few days and there was some concern, as the Cubs would not specify the reason for the pitcher’s departure. Fortunately, Wieck is back in Cubs camp, but that follows a heart procedure that was done on Monday in Chicago.
The Cubs announced the news on Thursday morning, saying there was an abnormal heartbeat detected on an EKG during Wieck’s physical exam.
The Cubs will let Wieck rest for a week before determining his pitching schedule.
Wieck, 28, was picked up by the Cubs from the Padres at the trade deadline last season. After putting up some big strikeout numbers in the minors, Wieck was called up in September and was pretty decent in 14 appearances. The left-hander recorded 18 strikeouts, allowing just two hits and four walks in 10 innings of work.
Hopefully all is well with Wieck, who looked like he was a semi-lock to be on the Opening Day roster entering spring training.
