Kevin Spacey compares himself to people losing their jobs during coronavirus
Kevin Spacey is comparing his fall from stardom following sexual assault accusations against him to job losses during the coronavirus pandemic.
“In this instance, I feel as though I can relate to what it feels like to have your world suddenly stopped,” Spacey said as a guest at the Bits and Pretzels Virtual Founders Breakfast on March 29. “So while we may have found ourselves in similar situations, for very different reasons and circumstances, I still believe that some of the emotional struggles are very much the same, and so I do have empathy for what it feels like to suddenly be told you can’t go back to work or that you might lose your job and that is a situation that you have absolutely no control over.”
On Twitter, the comparison Spacey made between himself and those who have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic really rubbed people the wrong way.
“Not Kevin Spacey comparing him losing his job for being a sexual predator to coronavirus pandemic,” Twitter user @kindapopular wrote.
In 2017, Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey made sexual advances against him when he was 14. Rapp was Spacey’s first accuser, and following his accusation, more than a dozen others came forward to accuse Spacey of sexual harassment and assault. Some of Spacey’s accusers filed lawsuits against him, and some died, leading to conspiracy theories. The hit Netflix show he starred in, House of Cards, eventually dropped him, and he hasn’t seen the small or big screen since.
