Mitch Trubisky May Have Just Delivered Decisive Blow In Bears QB Battle

0

The truth is nobody can say for sure exactly where this Chicago Bears QB competition stands. Matt Nagy and the coaches make the final decision on it and they no doubt view things through a different lens than the media or common fans. That being said, it’s hard not to feel like Mitch Trubisky is starting to take full control of the situation over Nick Foles.

This is not to say Foles has looked terrible. By most accounts, he’s been steady. The veteran distributes the ball well and has had some nice throws. However, Trubisky has looked sharper. He’s completed more passes and just seemed more accurate overall. Considering he had the advantage of working with receivers all offseason and also it’s his third year in this offense? None of this should be a surprise.

Yet because of what happened last season, it is.

Now though it seems Trubisky may have delivered the “kill shot.” Thus far neither quarterback has had a truly great throw in full 11-on-11 drills. So the Saturday practice that featured almost exclusive scrimmage situations was a grand opportunity. One the 26-year old seized with what most call the best throw of camp. One that even got a rise out of Nagy.

Mitch Trubisky would need an epic collapse to lose the job now

It’s hard not to feel like Trubisky already has the job in hand now. There is no preseason to worry about and the number of padded practices is getting lower by the day. It feels like nothing short of a monumental collapse could sway the momentum away from him starting opening day in Detroit. That or just a string of incredible performances by Foles in the next two weeks.

Something that Bears defense doesn’t seem prone to allowing.

Some people will throw up their hands and declare the season a lost cause. Trubisky isn’t going to change anything. How much better can he actually be from last season? The answer to that is nobody knows. Huge turnarounds have happened before. Is it possible with him? Yes. He’s close to mastering the system verbiage. He has more options at tight end and the running game could also improve.

Combine that with being in a contract year? Stranger things have happened. Either way, it is his job to lose now.
