Quakes’ draw ends loss streak
Diego Valeri sent a penalty kick careening off the crossbar in the 75th minute and the Portland Timbers settled for scoreless tie with the Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium on Sunday.
For San Jose, it was a victory of sorts. The Quakes avoided losing their fifth straight match. The Timbers are winless in their past four, but the single point for the draw moved them past Seattle into fifth place in the Western Conference.
Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham made five saves to earn the shutout, including a foot save on a shot by newly signed Timbers designated player Lucas Melano inside the goal box just seconds before Valeri was taken down inside the penalty area to earn the penalty shot.
