Warner Bros Discovery New Name, Logo & Tagline Revealed

0

A name for the new media company created as a result of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger was announced today, along with a logo and tagline. The telecom giant, AT&T, purchased Time Warner, which has since been renamed to WarnerMedia, three years ago for $85 billion. This acquisition gave AT&T ownership of everything previously under the Time Warner banner, such as CNN, Turner Sports, Warner Bros. film studio, TBS, truTV, Cartoon Network, TNT, and HBO.

Last month, it was announced that AT&T will merge WarnerMedia with Discovery to create one single media company expected to be valued at $150 billion. To better compete in the streaming wars with Netflix and Disney, the deal combines Discovery’s leading reality TV programming with WarnerMedia’s premium entertainment, sports, and news. Discovery’s assets include TLC, Food Network, HGTV, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network, and the streaming service, Discovery+. Now, WarnerMedia and Discovery’s combined company is taking shape.

Today, the name of the combined company was unveiled: Warner Bros. Discovery. David Zaslav, Discovery's chief executive and the new company’s expected CEO, announced the name to employees from the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, according to Deadline. A new but old-timey logo was also revealed alongside a tagline, “The stuff that dreams are made of.” Read Zaslav's full statement below:

Warner Bros. Discovery will aspire to be the most innovative, exciting and fun place to tell stories in the world – that is what the company will be about. We love the new company’s name because it represents the combination of Warner Bros.’ fabled hundred year legacy of creative, authentic storytelling and taking bold risks to bring the most amazing stories to life, with Discovery’s global brand that has always stood brightly for integrity, innovation and inspiration.

The company’s tagline is a quote taken straight from the classic Warner Bros. film from 1941, The Maltese Falcon. Other than being a homage to the film studio’s rich history, the tagline is an indication of what the new company will be about. According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the new name will "honor, celebrate and elevate the world’s most-storied creative studio in the world with the high quality, global nonfiction storytelling heritage of Discovery.”

Since the merger has not yet even been approved by federal regulators, much is still unknown regarding the new company. Many consider the deal to be an attempt to increase their streaming presence, as HBO and Discovery only have about 80 million subscribers combined, compared to Netflix’s 208 million and Disney+’s 100 million. The combined company’s structure is currently unclear, but they are expected to offer an HBO Max-Discovery+ bundle. It will be interesting to see how this massive merger will affect the subscriber count and how it will compare to Netflix down the line. Much more will likely become apparent when the WarnerMedia-Discovery deal officially closes sometime in mid-2022.
