0

An expansion for The Binding of Isaac card game, The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls Requiem, was fully funded on Kickstarter within minutes of the campaign's launch. The Binding of Isaac is an indie roguelike game developed by Edmund McMillen and released in 2011. The popular indie title also spawned a card game, titled The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, which launched in December 2018.

The final expansion for The Binding of IsaacRepentance, was released on PC back in March 2021. The game's long-awaited third expansion took much inspiration from Antibirth, a fan-made expansion for the game. True to Binding of Isaac form, it also added a ton of content such as additional items, bosses, and room layouts. Before The Binding of Isaac: Repentance's release, developer Edmund McMillen claimed that the massive expansion was technically big enough to be considered a full sequel. Upon release, the expansion was praised for breathing new life into the roguelike title, with particularly impactful new features like local co-op and two new characters.

Now, it's been announced that the Kickstarter campaign for The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls Requiem has been funded within minutes of launch. According to an update from a collaborator on the project, the campaign's $100,000 goal was reached within just three minutes of the campaign's launch. The campaign reached $1,000,000 within only 90 minutes, and within the campaign's first day pledges reached more than $2,300,000. The campaign will last until July 2, with a number of different reward tiers based on the amount pledged to the project.

Card games have experienced a recent rise in popularity, with a new generation of players taking an interest in collecting and trading cards. Pokémon cards have become increasingly rare in the United States, with collectors and casual fans alike finding it more difficult to find cards in stock at retailers. While cards from The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls are unlikely to become as rare as cards from the massively successful Pokémon franchise, these instant success of the Requiem expansion demonstrates the current demand for more card collections. In the case of Pokémon, the scarcity of cards has resulted in violence from those desperate to get their hands on any card currently in stock.

The Binding of Isaac is an unassuming indie title, but one that has managed to gain a massive cult following since its release nearly one decade ago. The game's rogeulike gameplay, unique art style and imaginative story have made it a classic title for many gamers. The game's popularity, and Edmund McMillen's commitment to serving his fans, likely contributed to the immediate success of The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls Requiem.
