Superstore: 5 Reasons Garrett & Dina Were Perfect As A Couple (& 4 They Were Better As Enemies)aa
For most of Superstore, fans were focused on the romantic relationship developing between Amy and Jonah. Along the line, Dina and Garrett developed some sort of a relationship. By the time the finale aired, it seemed to have developed into something serious, which was an unexpected surprise for both the characters and the fans.
The development of a relationship between Dina and Garrett brought up a lot of questions. Viewers wondered if it would be a sustainable one, considering that they had spent most of the six seasons of the shows barely getting along. Others were thrilled by this development and believed it was a perfect match.
9 Couple: They Were Comfortable With Each Other
Despite how much they argued, especially in the early seasons, Dina and Garrett were comfortable around each other. At first, this stemmed from their agreement to have a relationship that was only physical. They didn't feel the need to impress each other or pretend to be something they were not because, at the end of the day, they weren't committed to each other.
By removing the emotional component of a relationship, they saw each other's true selves; both the best and worst parts of their characters. And in a relationship, loving the good and the bad goes a long way to making it perfect.
8 Enemies: They Had Communication Issues
One thing Dina and Garrett had in common was their difficulty in being open and vulnerable around others. When they got upset or had their feelings hurt, even by each other, they didn't communicate it properly. Instead, they played games with each other's emotions, trying to one-up each other.
When she told everyone that she dumped him and they started feeling sorry for him, Garrett retaliated by announcing over the PA system that the breakup was his idea. In retaliation, Dina pretended to want to change her mind about the breakup and when Garrett agreed, she dumped him again. Their antics were hardly indicative of people who could be in a healthy romantic relationship with each other.
7 Couple: They Were Both Independent
Dina and Garrett's independence was another thing they had in common and an admirable trait to some extent. Being self-reliant helped them maintain their individual personalities. In a way, that individuality kept them from getting lost in the relationship or feeling like they had to change into something they were not to accommodate each other.
They also used that independence as a shield to protect themselves from being hurt. It was easier to deal with someone leaving them if they didn't care about them sticking around in the first place. In this way, they understood each other and it would help them know how to break each other's walls down.
6 Enemies: They Had A Lack Of Emotional Intelligence
When Dina and Garrett initially got together, they agreed that the relationship would only be purely physical. Even when it was clear there was an emotional aspect involved, they both fought it and preferred to go to extreme lengths to prove that they cared less about the other.
That kind of lack of emotional intelligence would make any relationship a nightmare. If people can't be honest about their feelings in a relationship, it usually doesn't fare well or last long. It was almost a childish game where they waited for the other to admit to having feelings because they didn't want to be the first to say it.
5 Couple: Indifferent To People's Opinions
Neither Dina nor Garrett really seemed to care much what people thought of them. On the surface, they were completely indifferent to people's opinions and did their own thing. At times, a few cracks in their armor showed they used indifference to hide their vulnerabilities.
Since they had this in common, it was easier for them to recognize when they were deflecting to avoid being vulnerable and help each other be more open. By the end of the show, they were both funnier, friendlier, and open with others and not just themselves, because they grew as a couple.
4 Enemies: He Set Her Birds Free
Everyone knew Dina loved her birds more than anything. In spite of that, Garrett set the birds free when she brought them to the store in a cage at the end of season 4. She was heartbroken when they left and got even angrier once she found out that Garrett had done it and then lied to her.
While people in a relationship inevitably hurt each other in some way, this was malicious and something Dina felt was too big to forgive. Given how they liked getting back at each other, she was bound to retaliate with something equally hurtful and that's just something enemies would do not people in a healthy relationship.
3 Couple: They Cared About Each Other
Underneath all their fights and arguments, Dina and Garrett cared about each other. Since they kept their feelings to themselves, it was hard to see that but it was there in the little things. For example, after the tornado, Dina did a roll call to check that everyone was safe and she told Garrett she was glad he didn't die.
They both had relationships with other people after that, but in the final season, their feelings started to become obvious. Thankfully, they stopped fighting them. With a foundation of love and care, their relationship had the potential to become something great.
2 Enemies: She Burnt His Shoes
When Dina was hurt, she wouldn't get mad. She'd get even. After the bird fiasco when she found out Garrett had set them free and kept that from her, she burnt all his vintage sneakers, which she knew he valued a lot. In her eyes, it was almost equal retaliation or an eye for an eye as it were.
This wasn't a healthy way for her to deal with what had happened, especially for people in a relationship. For enemies, however, it was the perfect flaming revenge.
1 Couple: They Made Each Other Better People
People in a good relationship usually influence each other and sometimes it makes them better people. They learn from each other's individual traits, which is something Dina and Garrett achieved even without realizing it. The more time they spent together, the more they changed and became significantly likable.
During their interactions, Garrett often pointed out that Dina was too cold and uncaring, like when she chose to flip a coin to decide who should get an extra helmet during a tornado. She became more empathetic with time and he became less impatient and learned to communicate his feelings on matters concerning the two of them.
