Uncharted Movie Updates: Release Date, Cast & Story Details
Among Tom Holland’s projects outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Uncharted, based on the video game of the same name, and here’s everything you need to know about it. Superhero movies keep dominating the film industry thanks to big connected universes like the MCU and DC’s Extended Universe, but video game adaptations have also joined the fun to bring something “new” amidst all the superhero stories. Although video game adaptations are not new, they don’t have the best reputation as most haven’t been exactly good and successful (like the Tomb Raider movies, which live in infamy), but that hasn’t stopped studios from trying.
One project that seems to have been in production for ages is Uncharted, an action-adventure movie based on the video game of the same name and starring Tom Holland. Uncharted has gone through a variety of obstacles since pre-production, with various screenwriters and directors taking part in it and leaving for different reasons, numerous rumors on who would star in it and the story it would cover, the coronavirus pandemic putting filming on hold for a while, and the project being delayed multiple times for these and more reasons. With principal photography officially over and Sony finally landing a release date that works for it, Uncharted seems to finally be on its way to be released.
Given all the changes Uncharted has gone through since it was announced to be in development in 2008, it’s easy to lose track of who is starring in it, who ended up directing, what the story will be, and when it will finally be released – and here’s everything you need to know about the movie adaptation of Uncharted.
As mentioned above, Uncharted went through many delays for different reasons, with its original release date going all the way back to June 2016. It was pushed to December 2020 and later March 2021 after Travis Knight’s departure, and following more delays as a result of the pandemic, it finally landed what seems to be its definitive release date: February 18, 2022. As for where it will be released, Uncharted will go on the traditional route and will be released theatrically, though Netflix acquired exclusive rights to stream Sony’s theatrical releases, including Uncharted, but it won't coincide with its theatrical release, so you can expect it to be available to stream sometime in 2024.
Uncharted, directed by Ruben Fleischer, stars Tom Holland as Nathan “Nate” Drake, a young fortune hunter who claims to be a descendant of none other than Sir Francis Drake; Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, another fortune hunter and Nate’s mentor and father figure; Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, another fortune hunter and Nate’s love interest, who was introduced in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves; Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, and Antonio Banderas in an undisclosed role, rumored to be that of the movie’s villain.
After many rumors on what the Uncharted movie could be about, it was revealed that it will serve as a prequel to the video game series, with the events set before the first game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, thus following a young Nathan Drake. It’s not exactly considered as an origin story for Drake, but it will definitely explore some bits of his backstory.
A proper trailer or teaser for Uncharted hasn’t been released yet, only a couple of official images showing set details as well as Holland and Wahlberg in character, and some very brief footage in a special video from Sony. In it, Holland and Wahlberg can be seen very quickly, so this footage doesn’t reveal anything about the movie, except for how their characters look in suits. Now, supposing the release date for Uncharted doesn’t change again, a proper trailer can be expected to arrive between July and September 2021, in time for Sony to prepare the marketing campaign for the movie.
