Batman ‘89 Artist Shares First Look at Two-Face | Screen Rant

0

Batman '89 will see Billy Dee Williams' Harvey Dent return, and artist Joe Quinones has released the first look. Although Harvey Dent played a role in Tim Burton's film, he never got to evolve into the villain he was originally planned to. There were plans for Harvey to become Two-Face in Burton's sequel Batman Returns, but the idea was sidelined when they realized the film was already overstuffed with other varying storylines and characters. Additionally, Williams was originally set to reprise his role but never did.

However, it's been made clear by Batman '89's artist Joe Quinones that the new series will utilize many of the unused concepts from the films. Back in 2015, Quinones teamed up with writer Kate Leth to tackle the same project, but it was ultimately scrapped. With Quinones returning, naturally, it can be assumed that a lot of his unused concept designs will be retooled. Along with those that were drafted up for a potential sequel to Batman Returns. Teasing fans, Quinones has been offering previews via Twitter, where he’s been releasing snippets of his drawings for the series.

Now, Quinones has released an official first look at Harvey Dent in Batman ‘89. His design is based on the likeness of Billy Dee Williams, who appeared in Burton’s Batman film. Making the jump to the comic book page in Batman ‘89, it seems he will make a full transformation into the iconic Batman villain, Two-Face. It must be noted this teaser is only a snippet of one of his sketches, and changes could be made as its release date is still a few months out. Check out the first look below:

Just like Quinones’ other tweets, this one showcases a new look at one of his main characters. Harvey Dent flips his iconic coin, in a not-so-subtle nod to what he will become. However, it will get fans excited as it’s a glaring reference to what will eventually happen during the series. His transformation will likely occur pretty early into Batman ‘89’s run. Additionally, in his scrapped 2015 Batman '89 concepts, a mock-up of Two-Face featured. Therefore, it can be assumed the intention of Quinones’ initial vision was to have Two-Face play into the series, which will probably apply here as well. Finally, in the teaser, Dent wears the same striped shirt worn by Billy Dee Williams in the original film. Along with his jacket and tie, proving that Batman ‘89 will be faithful to its source material.

And as if the Quinones tweet wasn't enough to whet fans' appetites, DC also recently revealed a variant cover for Batman '89 #1 from Jerry Ordway that sees post-transformation Billy Dee Williams' Harvey Dent in all his Two-Face glory:

The series will pick up shortly after the end of Batman Returns, continuing the adventures of Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight. Batman ‘89 will be released on July 27.
